A Cold January on Tyneside

By: Daryl | Comments 15 Comments

Managing: Newcastle
Date: January 2nd, 2009
Progress: 6th in Prem, need to make the most of transfer window
It’s not looking like a happy January. First of all, Mike Ashley finally sold up. Saudi billionaires? American millionaires? Nope and nope. It was Newcastle board member David Williamson who’s been haggling over a price with Ashley ever since I [...]

Alan Smith Will Have His Revenge on Newcastle

By: Daryl | Comments 3 Comments

Managing: Newcastle
Date: Jan 1st, 2009 (happy pretend new year!)
Progress: 6th in Prem after 20 games.
Remember I predicted my top four challenge wouldn’t last? Well, that’s what’s happening now.
All it took was a white haired Eminem wannabe striker who’d just been waiting to make me regret selling him. Yep, Alan Smith.
vs WBA (away) L 5-2. So, [...]

No One Tells Alan Dzagoev What To Do

By: Daryl | Comments 9 Comments

So this Alan Dzagoev kid is giving me trouble. I wanted a young and exciting attacking midfielder, but what I got was a surly teenager who speaks no English.
Or so he says.
I’d mentioned previously that he’s trying too many though balls and giving away possession, and that the fans regard my decision to spend £6.75m [...]

Europe Here We Come! (Maybe)

By: Daryl | Comments 7 Comments

Managing: Newcastle
Date: December 4th 2008
Progress: 3rd in Prem (no, really) after 16 games.
Not really sure how this has happened, but yeah, I’m in a Champions League spot. Just six points behind joint leaders Arsenal and Chelsea. Don’t believe me? I don’t blame you. But here’s a screenshot of the Premier League table, if it helps [...]

Good Times

By: Daryl | Comments 8 Comments

Managing: Newcastle
Date: November 1st, 2008
Progress: 7th in Prem after 11 games.
So, my new attacking scheme is a success. In addition to telling wingers Leonardo and Jonas to just go all out attack and don’t bother coming back, I’ve got Charles N’Zogbia and Habib Beye playing as overlapping fullbacks. And here are the results:

Attack, Attack, Attack-Attack-Attack!

Managing: Newcastle

Progress: 8th in the Prem after 8 games
Today’s Magic Number: 8
After beating Wolves in the Carling Cup (no thanks to Jozy “shoots high and wide” Altidore) I faced my first big test. Arsenal away. Not the sinking ship Arsenal we see in the Premier League today, but a machine-like mega-Arsenal who [...]

Obafemi Martins Likes it When I Yell at Him

By: Daryl | Comments 5 Comments

Managing: Newcastle
Date: September 20th, 2008
Progress: 8th in Prem after 5 games, King of the North-East (temporarily)
Still beaming about my recently purchased Russian duo, I braced myself for back to back North East derbies. First up: Sunderland, at the Stadium of Light. Or, because I’m getting a little too much into this managing Newcastle thing, the [...]

The Russian Revolution

By: Daryl | Comments No Comments

So I sacrificed my wage budget to push my transfer budget to the max for transfer deadline day and raised it to a respectable £11m. Then I spent every last penny on a pair of Russians to solve my target man and attacking mid problems:
Pavel Pogrebnyak (click for screenshot) – the 24 year old [...]

Transfer Deadline Day

By: Daryl | Comments 5 Comments

Managing: Newcastle
Date: August 31st
Progress: 12th in Prem after three games.
After struggling to a 0-0 draw and a win on spot kicks against Coventry in the Carling Cup, my boys got absolutely taken apart by Man City. In my defence this is a Man City team that’s been rich since July, so they had not just [...]

Never Underestimate Kevin Kilbane

By: Daryl | Comments 1 Comment

Managing: Newcastle
Date: August 24th
Progress: 8th in Prem after two games.
That’s the lesson I learned on my FM2009 Premier League debut against Wigan. Before the game Chris Hughton told me to pay attention to Wigan’s dangermen: Olivier Kapo and Kevin Kilbane. I laughed in his face.
Not about Kapo, I instructed my players to force him onto [...]
