A Cold January on Tyneside
By: Daryl | November 28th, 2008
Managing: Newcastle
Date: January 2nd, 2009
Progress: 6th in Prem, need to make the most of transfer window
It’s not looking like a happy January. First of all, Mike Ashley finally sold up. Saudi billionaires? American millionaires? Nope and nope. It was Newcastle board member David Williamson who’s been haggling over a price with Ashley ever since I started. His first message to me was that “there are no plans for further investment at this time.” So there goes my January shopping spree.
What I could have on my hands instead is selling spree. Obafemi Martins has 15 goals in 18 starts, is worth £8.75m and is wanted by: Aston Villa, Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd, Inter Milan. All those clubs have cash, but I want Oba. Big problem is that Oba has a minimum fee release clause of £13m. Trying desparately to get him to sign a new contract sans release clause, but he wants £61,000 a week and I can only go as high as £40,000.
I could maybe go higher if I adjusted the budget and sacrificed some of my paltry £1.9 million transfer kitty. Or maybe I should just sell up and reinvest. Decisions decisions.
The best solution might be to let Oba go for £13m (like I have any choice) and find a replacement pacy striker. Only problem is I’m having trouble finding someone affordable. Any ideas?
Pacy strikers aside, here are some other possible January targets:
Ronaldo himself (click for screenshot) is available. Not C-Ron, the chubby one. He’s 32 and still got great skills, if a lack of pace and worrying weight of 209lbs. Seems I could get him for about 6,000 a week, but signing injured old timers has never gone well for me in the past. On the other hand, I can’t help thinking that a Ronaldo signing could sell some shirts to easily excitable Geordies.
Andriy Rusol looks a top defender, and his contract apparently expired yesterday (1st Jan, 2009). However, I can’t offer him a contract and he’s still worth 4m apparently. It’s been suggested that this is a glitch in the Matrix, and that it’s impossible to sign him. But I’m going to try and unsettle him by declaring my interest anyway. I’m sneaky like that.
Chanda Mwamba is a 20 year old Zambian centre mid with solid creative stats and a low low price tag of 140k. Can’t help but be interested. Might sign him just for the hell of it and see what happens.
Vaclav Kadlek is a 16 year old Sparta Prague striker who’s on the transfer list for some reason. Won’t help me this year, but looks like a wonderkid waiting to happen. Should be available for less than half a mil.
Genero Zeefuik is an 18 year old Dutch striker with PSV, currently on loan at the oddly named Omniworld. Again, looks like a player for the future.
Obviously, these are all on the cheap. Selling Martins would at least give me some proper cash to spend. John Fleck might be an option should that happen, and former “new Pele” Nilmar is also a possibility. Any suggestions for fast as lightning strikers costing no more than £10m?

Check out Adem Ljajic from Partizan Belgrade. Oddly enough he is in the news today is its rumored he will sign for MU. Also of note, the Lorient academy has a bunch of really promising young players, but upon further investigation they are all fake, but in the game that doesnt matter, so take a look at them, they cost about a mill for 15 year olds, but their development seems assured.

Quick update: Man U have bid £13m and Inter have bid £15.75m. But both bids were structired (3/4m up front, the rest over 24 months) and seems like only the upfront fee triggers the min. fee release clause. So still got Oba, but… any higher then 15.75m, even structured, and I’m tempted to just take the cash.
Have signed Kadlek for 100k. Fans seemed very excited, so good move. Genero Zeeduik offer accepted, but he’s not interested in talking to me.
Other news: Spurs bid 6.75m for my joint 1st choice left back Jose Enrique. I turned it down (he’s really very solid, and only 22) and he’s not happy.

you need a pacey replacement that is young and wont cost much? you basically described Bojan Krkic. An no, i dont mean buying him, getting him on loan sounds more realistic.

I got into FM after reading this blog and started managing the Red Bulls in MLS. Unlike Daryl I was lucky enough to have my club bought by a rich Lithuanian tycoon who immediately invested $82 million dollars into the club, lol.

So I’m going to sound very, very stupid, but how do I make a substitution during the game? It gave me the option at half time and I chose not to, but now I can’t find how to do it…

When my asst. manager tells me that my striker is “acting like he’s used to playing a less direct game than asked to today” what does that mean? what should I do?

I think it means your passing is set to “direct”, and that he’s not suited to playing that way. Probably the balls being played to him are too direct, so you need to change the team passing style to something less direct. But I’m not 100% sure on that. And to be honest, seems like the ass man is always complaining about something, so I’d say only consider changing things if that striker’s doing badly.

I had my passing set to long and he was telling me this. I’ve since changed it to mixed and haven’t had the problem again, so I’m assuming it was that. And it’s true, he really is always complaining about something, but it helps, I guess. haha.
So here’s my FM Career so far…
I’m managing Man City (cut me some slack, I’ve never done this before!) and I’m 2 games into the Prem, beat a bunch of crap teams in the EC and friendlies, beat Hull 2-0 and held a much better Pompey side to a 0-0 draw. My team is really underachieving I think, mostly due to my crappy managerial skills…Posted from

mele419 mancity are so loaded they can buy players like it was no tomorrow, get srna and zhirkov as they are great players down the wings, play em as fullbacks/wingbacks and they do great.
For youngsters get saivet(4mill), fiorillo(8mill) , galvan(2.4mil) and sakho(9mil) MUST buys. These guys are guarateed good.
Other great players to get for cheap are mauricio(free transfer), carioca(3mill), opare(real madrid,250k), pichu atienza(atletico 350k buyout). Of these The only one i can use first season is carioca who has 2 stars. annoying thing with youngsters that you really need good scouts to see if they turn out good, since young players stats are randomly generated according to a rating.I guess your getting unlucky with abreiu as he is doing quite well with me but i use a 433 with wingers that cross alot and abreiu is very attacking and they aim for his head. Great target man for a year or two.
442 is hard to play with unless you have 2 very good midfielders much easier to play with 2 DMs and 1 CM.Attacking players are easy to find, just get a youngster with potential and they usually blossom early, the hard ones to find are good goalies and defensive players, if you find one hold onto them.
