Anyone for Foti?
By: Daryl | February 11th, 2009
Managing: Newcastle
Date: Jan 5th, 2011
Progress: 5th in Prem after 19 games.
Two match reports, and two excellent wins.
Plus I may have found the answer to my Complainiola problem.
But first the match reports…
vs Everton (home) W 3-2
- – - – - – - – Given – - – - – - -
Taylor – Rusol – Coloccini – Enrqiue
- – - – - – - Camacho – - – - -
- – - – Marquinhos – Skjelbred – - –
Arshavin – - – - – - – - – - -Lewandowski
- – - – - – The Pog – - – - – -
4-1-2-2-1, lots of width, short passing, slow tempo; offside trap, high defensive line
Slight formation change here, because Everton are tricky. They play 4-4-1-1 with Yakubu like a batterking ram up front and Leon Osman evading markers and constantly sneaking on to flick ones. So… I switched to have Camacho as a proper d-mid, man-marking Osman, and had Coloccini man mark Yakubu with Rusol free.
Worked like a charm. And when Lewandowski headed us in front after 30 minutes I turned the defensive screws a little more, dropping Arshavin and Lewandoski pack to midfield to form a 4-1-4-1. The result was two more counter-attacking goals before half-time, Marquinhos twice arriving late at the far post to tap in low Lewandowski crosses.
I was feeling like a tactical genius, if I’m honest. Which is how I screwed things up so royally at half-time. To save some legs I brought off The Pog, Lewandowski and Skjelbred for Saviola (one more chance up front on his own) John Fleck and Alan Dzagoev.
Everton came out 4-4-2 and went at me, and managed to get two goals back. I was hanging on and timewasting from the 80th minute onwards, just waiting for the whistle. We got the 3-2 win but Saviola proved once again (he got a 5.3) that he can’t play in this system.
vs Man Utd (home) W 4-2
- – - – - – - – Given – - – - – - -
Taylor – Rusol – Coloccini – Enrqiue
- – - Skjelbred – - Camacho – - – -
Jonas – - Marquinhos – - Lewandowski
- – - – - – The Pog – - – - – -
4-2-3-1, lots of width, short passing, slow tempo; offside trap, high defensive line
Back to the usual formation, with Enrique kicking lumps out of man marking Ronaldo. Great great game.
Once again we were 3-0 up by half time (why can’t games last just 45 minutes) with two from Pog and one from the suddenly en fuego Marquinhos (Premier League young player of the month, fyi)
But this time I told the boys not to let their performances drop in the second half, and didn’t make any silly substitutions. Man Utd pulled a couple back, but Pog killed them off by completing his hat-trick and I told the press afterwards that I’d glady have the big Russian’s babies, if such a thing were possible and provided they went straight in the Newcastle youth team. No one laughed.
This puts me fifth at the halfway point, just three points behind fourth place Arsenal, though Man Utd still have two games in hand:

Fourth place is a genuine possibility this year. And now it’s January, I have the chance to solve my Saviola problem.
And I really have a problem with him. The press asked me how I felt about him after the Man Utd game, and there was an option to say “I don’t have any time for him”. But I lied and said that I “appreciate his talents”.
I don’t. And isn’t it weird how easy it is to lie to the press?
Either way: Saviola is going, and a replacement is coming in.
I have just £2.5m in the transfer kitty, but can raise that to nearly £10m by adjusting the wage budget. So all is not lost. Even better, I can sell Saviola. That would raise a couple million and shave £51,000 per week off the wage budget. So I think all in all I could raise at least £12 million in January spending money.
…
Transfer listing Saviola produced immediate interest, and offering him around has brought in bids from the like of Hull, QPR, Deportivo, Derby and Getafe, all for £3m. I’ll take that right now, but hopefully send him back to Spain where he can’t come back to haunt me.
Then I have to choose a replacement, and I think I’ve found just the man. Sampdoria’s 22 year old striker Salvatore Foti. Take a look at this fellas numbers. He’s 6′4″, and got a 19 for jumping. So he’s definitely winning some headers. He’s also got good technique, dribbling and finishing. I’m 90% convinced that this is a guy who could not just backup The Pog but could actually give him some serious competition for a first team spot. What do you think?

I don’t know. He’s only got two goals in his last five games. But it seems like he’s not playing much. Could be worth a shot.

I think he’ll score 15-20 goals a season on corners alone. Is there any chance you can get him for £13 million, though?

Foti is a good FM player. He always performs well in the later seasons and consistently bangs goals in. His value is quite high and I think it’d be hard to get him and Sampdoria to part ways for anything but a few pretty pennies. I think you should try to find cheaper alternatives but if you can afford him, I say go for it.
Sell Saviola to anyone that will take him is my opinion. But make sure he doesn’t sucker you into one of those deals where you continue to pay his wages because I doubt that any of those clubs will pony up 51k wages. Last thing you want is him pulling a Sven on you!
The race for 4th looks better than the one we have for realz in this year’s Premier League. Tottenham and United hot on your trails but the top 3 aren’t that far in front of you! If you sign the right players, could this be the year?
Keep us informed!

Do you need another target-man? I guess if you always want to stick with one up top then this is the guy to go for. One for the futrue too.

I’d definitely get him if I were you. His stats are brilliant. For a tall lad he has buckets of pace. He’ll really give The Pog some competition if he you get him. I doubt it’d be too long before you pick him ahead of The Pog actually.

Foti is brilliant, get him for under 15 mill and you’re doing alright. He has it all

Looks a fantastic player, will probaly cost a lot though, also if he is getting first team football at Sampadoria he may not like sitting on the bench for Pogrebnyak at times.
Bad news on my save, my file ‘could not be loaded’ and since I had turned off autosave because it kept bugging me I lost everything! Really quite depressing, all my wonderkids would starting to shine, felt I could challenge for the league in a couple more seasons!

This may not be the right place to ask but this is the FM site I visit the most, so here goes. Has anyone had any luck playing with three strikers? I got fired by Aston and started a new save as Man City (admittedly to lower the difficulty a bit as I learn the game). I bought the Pog and Owen to partner with Robinho but I am struggling to figure out how to best deploy them. Any ideas?
@James. That really, really sucks. Best of luck starting again.

fwmbt, thanks
. Ive never tried 3 strikers as it makes me feel vunerable in either defence or midfield, no matter who I have playing there. But if I remember correctly, when I was Man City the Pog & Robinho worked fantastically up front together, so if you dont find a successful formation with 3 up front I’d stick to Pog & Robinho up front and Owen on the bench.

My current formation is sort of like having three strikers. Both the wide men are set to maximum attacking mentality and “free role” and it’s working wonders for someone like Lewandowski who is basically a striker but can alos play attacking mid left.
If you could find one central striker and two strikers who are also “accomplished” as attacking mid left and right, then that might work. Otherwise you’re sacrificing too much width.

God, if only Foti had those attributes in real life. The Azzurri could use him.

Daryl… I have one name for you
Mohsen Mosalman (real player, born 1991)
Listen to this (I’m not on my FM computer) but I can tell you this, I started with Leeds United in League 1, and easily gained promotion to the Championship, and during the season, I played against stoke city, and they had this kid, and i scouted him, and as soon as i scouted him, he became unhappy with his manager, so i bought him for 1.5 million in the January window, and he went on to score 13 times for me in the second half of the season, and after the season, I gained promotion to the premier league (I finished 5th in the league and won the playoff, and I know it only took one season, but i only had about like 4 players from my original league 1 starting XI), and the next season, he achieved the ‘Wonderkid’ Status at age 19 and scored 23 goals for me in the premier league, winning the young player of the year award as well… he has amazing stats: finishing, composure, heading, and strength are all over 16
and listen to this, I now play a 1 striker system, and he already has 9 goals in the first 8 games

I used to have him a few versions ago. Class up front but I have forgotten about him. He didn’t turn out to be that good in 07 and 08.

Thanks for the help guys. I ended up leaving Owen in a free role behind Robinho and The Pog. I don’t know why I was so worried, because, true to form, Owen got hurt in his second appearance. I also discover TTF last night and it has been a wonderful aide.

Mustafa,
Just checked out Mohsen Mosalman and he looks the business. Unfortunately he’s signed a pre-contract with FC Dallas, and will be joining them in the transfer window. Can only imagine that he’ll destroy MLS defences.
