Captain Fantastic
By: Daryl | June 7th, 2009
As you know, Fabricio Coloccini is out for two to three months with some sort of old man hip injury. There seemed to be some sort of agreement that no replacement was needed, so Andriy Rusol stepped in to replace the frizzy haired Argentinean/Argentine (is there a correct term for someone from Argentina?)
One thing I didn’t consider until right at kickoff was that Colo was my captain. Captain Colo.
Which means that while Captain Colo is out, Vice-Captain Pavel Pogrebnyak will wear the magic armband (it’s not really magic, but don’t tell The Pog). It went badly, very very badly…
…for West Ham that is.
For us it went great.
Since there were no objections in the last post, we went back to the ballsy attacking 4-1-2-1-2. Here’s the lineup:
Laurito and Fan Bo are still working their way back to full fitness, while Jonas was just back in time to get a place on the bench (his condition was 90%).
Captain Pog made a good case for wearing the armband full-time (he actually kicked up a small fuss when he wasn’t made proper captain at the start of the season) by scoring all four goals in a four-nil win. The man was incredible. Not only that, he had a hat-trick inside the first fourteen minutes. Again, incredible.
Even better (sort of), he was being marked by one of the guys I’d considered bringing in as a short term replacement for Colo: Mathias Jørgensen. That didn’t go so well for the young Danish defender. Pog got a 9.6 rating and four goals, while Jørgensen got a 4.7 and was substituted after 61 minutes. Ouchy ouchy.
Here are the final stats for our boys: (Click to embiggen*)
Can’t argue with that.
Final Score: 4-0
Going forward, we’ve got Portsmouth (14th) away. They play a Chelsea style 4-3-3 and have four former Toon men in the squad (Mascio, Joey Barton, Geremi and Peter Ramage). But they also have an injury + Africa Cup of Nations conbo crisis on their hands, with Crouch, Defoe, Verkapovskis and Aissatti all broken John Utaka, Song, Geremi, Mokoena all in Gabon for the Africa Cup of Nations (I was surprised to find that I have zero African players, which seems like a smart move while the tourney is on). Here’s the Pompey squad:
I’m leaning towards the 4-1-2-1-2 again, but could also be tempted by giving the 4-4-2 another chance given their three in midfield approach. More on that later.
Transfer wise, I’ve got a possible winter signing. Basically I don’t have enough Englishmen in the squad, and this young regen winger named Jamie Jones is is available for around £2 or 3m.
Yes, he looks a bit simple. And his av. rating for Reading is actually a bit rubbish. But he’s also young, quick, and English. I figure he’d make a nice pacy backup if Jonas and Marquinhos are ever out again (as they have been lately). What do you think?
Second, Big Lanky Per Mertesacker is available on a Bosman:
All the attributes you could ever want in a defender, except pace. But looks like he’s entering his prime as a centre back. And he has a funny name.
So, after all that, here are my questions for those still reading:
1. Which formation vs Portsmouth? The attacking 4-1-2-1-2 or the more stable 4-4-2?
2. Should we sign Jamie Jones? Should cost around £3m or less.
3. Should we sign Per Mertersacker? He’s available on a Bosman so would join us in the summer.
(*It’s a perfectly cromulent word.)

1. It’s Pompey. 4-1-2-1-2
2. OMG Yes. Appart from the awesome dribbling, pace, accel, crossing stats, he’s got good flair and determination stats and I’m fairly sure those two don’t change over time.
3. Two things, Wage? And would he be replacing somebody in particular?Posted from

1. 4-1-2-1-2
2. yes he seems like he can be molded, the finishing isnt there but he looks like a beast from the byline
3. depends on your finances, i feel like he would def be a step up from coloccini (unless colo has developed grandly in your game)Posted from

1. attack baby – 4-1-2-1-2 and keep Pog captain.
2. Worth a go, if he fails to make it you could probably sell for a profit.
3. Definate, I love bosmans in FM, even if they turn out poo you keep your kitty in tactPosted from

Yeah I think attack, and go for both the signings. Per will be great back up for Colo if nothing else.

as stated in line 2 of the Harry Redknapp Guide to Wheelin’ and Dealin’ – yes. ’s free after all; if it doesn’t work out, try to sell him for more than his wages and you’ll be up overall. at the very least your reserves will have a really tall, strong defender, and that’s never a good thing to play against. doesn’t need to be too long a contract if you’re worried and things.
and attack. cheers.

Sign both of em, the defender will at least be a good backup like others have said. He’s currently on £41,000 a week, I expect he will take a cut as he hasn’t been offered a contract yet..
The winger looks like one of those fantastic regens you get where he ends up nearly all 17-20 stats! He can run, dribble and cross. Good enough for at least back up!
Play the same way you did against West Ham against Pompey.

ps, embiggen may be cromulent, but antidisestablishmentarianism is indubitably polysyllabic,

1 – ATTACK!
2 – No, his name is far too alliterative. That and I have to disagree on something
3 – Yes, you’ve got to love a good Bosman.Posted from

Mertesacker is an especially good buy because being German, he does not get called up to their national squad of regens, so the chance of him getting injured on intl duty is nil.

1. Stick with 4-1-2-1-2. You beat West Ham 4-0 and Pompey have no natural striker available. Why rock the boat?
2. Not sure, but like the guy a few posts above me says, you can always sell him on for a tidy profit.
3. Yes, sign him! I’ve managed him before and he’s always been quality in every version of FM.Posted from
