Chantome Out, Camacho In

By: Daryl | January 28th, 2009

I’ve had a busy summer.

Outs:

Just one big one… Clement Chantome is gone, baby, gone. Signed for £12m last summer and one disappointing season later I’ve sold him to Valencia for £15m. How did that happen? Not sure. But I think it has something to do with France winning the World Cup and Chantome being in the squad (even though he spent the whole tournament on the bench). Either way, I took Valencia’s money and ran away laughing. Suckers.

Here’s how I spent it:

The board gave me £18m to spend, and the was before the Chantome sale. So was feeling pretty flush

Ins:

Ignacio Camacho £17.25m
Obviously this was my big purchase. Yes, he was expensive. But look at those stats momma. Hopefully Camacho will be the player Chantome was supposed to be. Solid defensive mid with an eye for a pass.

Andrei Arshavin £5.75m
This could turn out to be a mistake. But I’ve always wanted to work with the lad, and Man City were willing to sell cheap. No idea what Mark Hughes is up to, but he just spent £19.5m on Aiden McGeady.

George Wijnaldum free
Very excited about this young man.

Rodney Sneijder £875k
Yep, Wesley’s brother. Another Dutch youngster. Lacking in pace, but has plenty of skills.

Matts Hummels free
Big German defender that Bayern no longer wanted. Looks the business, but broke his leg in pre-season.

Stephane Friedrich free
Hummel’s former teammate at Bayern, so signed him just to keep Hummels company. What Friedrich doesn’t know is that I’m going to break his leg too – Misery style – to make sure he and Hummels share the same experience.

Dwayne Miller 700k
Needed a backup for Shay Given, and Miller seemed like the guy. Plus he makes a mean jerk sauce.

Per Ciljan Skjelbred £2.5m
Norwegian mid signed on deadline day. To be honest I’m not 100% keen. But Chris Hughton kept saying our midfield looked weak and David Appleton gave Skjelbred such a glowing recommendation in the comments here that I though he was worth a gamble for £2.5m. Will give him a go and see what happens.

I’m already regretting this little spending spree to be honest. I’ve put faith in Marquinhos and Arshavin to get me some goals alongside The Pog and Lewandowski, but starting to think they’re not really the 20 a season type and I might have been better off buying one expensive striker instead.

shoulda just bought one real big badass. camacho looks good but that sure is a lot of money. i think youll look at yourself and realize you pulled a Rafa when he nabbed Dirk and Yossi instead of one guy of better talent. Andre looks good and i bet performs well i just hate the twat. looks like you have some good young talent coming in and it will help over time, im not sure its gonna help you keep 5th spot.

37k @#$%ing quid a week for Andrei? I don’t care if it’s a video game, Arsenal needs to hire you as a consultant ASAP.

Camacho is a smart purchase. Just like Marquinhos, very expensive but he will pay off in the end.

France won the world cup in your game as well? Ugh. This game is fixed. And then Argentina goes and loses 1-0 against the Ukraine.

Some good signings there Daryl. On FM08 Arshavin was dynamite on my AC Milan game. Was my best player a few seasons in a row! SO I wouldn’t regret buying him.

Oh by the way, the link to Ignacio Camacho’s stats actually goes to Skjelbred’s stats.

    Just a heads up…

As long as you can keep Arshavin motivated, I think he’ll work out very well for you. He’s worked great for me as a striker, center and left attacking mid (haven’t tried him at right for some reason). The kid can definitely score goals though!

i got camacho, a “great asset to the team” says my top scout. Im currently after fiorentina’s jovetic to replace nedved as he becomes eligible for senior citizen discounts soon. any advice? i am Juventus, and have balotelli in for iaquinta and Camacho in for Tiago, also picked up mauricio free and Perna for 3mil, plus manniger is on loan. (to man city i think) italy won the olympics with half of their team in my squad.

does anybody know if you an continue a game you started on the demo when you get the real game??

Sneijder and Arshavin for bargins. Rodney comes good after a few seasons, so you might well have lucked out there.

well Camacho is Quality and Marquinhos is also pretty good…might not score 20 for the season but will definitely chip in 10-15…

Arshavin i am not sure…U should try and sell him next year and get someone like Salvator Foti.. he will come cheap and scores decent number of goals…

In midfield, Try and get Aaron Ramsey he grows up to become a quality player..The more you play him the faster he reaches his full potential of 5/5…

camacho’s a good player and sneijder somehow went through some stunning form bursting into my arsenal team so a good buy i reckon. was feeling smug as i got camacho for 8 first season, then remembered i’d spent 20 on arshavin the following season and u’ve taught me a bit of a lesson there!

Camacho will turn out to be a fantastic signing for you mate, When I was Athletico Madrid he was one of my best players! Got Sneijder for my Newcastle too, been playing him in easy cup matches, he seems he can do okay, will need to get some more experiance in my 2010 January transfer window however, having to put a lot of youth on the bench and worried it may come back to bite me in the ass!

I just grabbed Sneijder a couple of days back. I’m waiting very eagerly for January. Is it better to let him develop on the reserves or on my bench? How does FM09 handle that?

fwembt, not too sure – I’ve got him on my bench but he rarely gets played, anyone else know what is best for a young player? Clubs dont want to loan him because he’s a new signing.

Just had Arsenal add Chantome to their French army in my game, so you’re not alone in thinking he would be a good signing.

The guy can definitely pass. Problem is that I wanted him to be defensive mid, or at least a holding mid, and he just can’t tackle.

He’s got decent tackling stats (15 I think) and decent strength. But he didn’t ever make a “proper” tackle. It was more that he’d challenge someone and create a 50/50 situation, and then always – always – lose the 50/50.
