Fifth is the New First!
By: Daryl | January 26th, 2009
It’s not really of course. But trying to count my blessings here.
But, yeah. I did it. Finished fifth as promised (one better than last year) and feeling pretty good about it.
Quick match reports from final five games of the 2009/10 season:
vs West Ham (away) D 0-0
Pogrebnyak injured his ankle, Marquinhos disappeared, and anyone who payed money to see this rubbish deserves a refund.
I hardly ever use magic potion painkilling injections on injured players, mostly because it means those players will probably need a walking stick in later life. But the physios gave me this choice:

And I figured “two months is two months” and even if it goes wrong and he gets even more injured he’ll be back in time for next season. What’s that Pog? You want to play for Russia at the World Cup? Oh, sorry, too late, already injected you.
vs Chelsea (home) L 1-0
So he played, and – possible high as a kite on painkillers – he was rubbish. Didn’t get any more injured though, so he still went to the World Cup. Everyone wins. Except me, because Drogba scored in the 39th. So top four dream is definitely a goner.
vs Reading (away) W 3-1
Nothing to wash away disappointment like playing these no-hopers (finished bottom with 15 points, not quite Derby County, but joint second worst team ever in the Premier League alongside Sunderland). Lewandowski (whose attributes are looking better all the time – compare the boy he was when I bought him to the man he is now) got a goal and an assist. My £12m flop Chantome got another chance and scored after coming on at h/t. Even young Danny Sturridge (remember him?) got a goal. Can we play you every week? Oh, no, you’re going down.
vs West Brom (home) W 2-0
Now Marquinhos is injured too, but good to give a lot of not-quite first teamers (Lewandowski, N’Zogbia, Chantome) a run-out. The Lew-man himself scored both goals here. That boy was 1m well spent.
vs Bolton (home) W 1-0
Fifth was mine so long as I avoided defeat. Which I did, with a rare Steven Taylor strike. Don’t think it was a co-incidence that Fabio Capello was wacthing and about to name his England squad for South Africa 2010. ST made it, but none of my other English first teamers did. Because there aren’t any.
So, the final league table looks like this…

Basically, I’m going to Europe and Sunderland are going to the Championship. Literally half their squad his being sold to reduce the wage bill, so that’s them ruined. I’ll miss playing them, but will happily revel in their misery.
Now some bad news:

Not really sure what to do about that.
Finally, here are the team stats for the 2009/10 season. The fans voted Jonas player of the year, and I’m not about to disagree with them:

Have you played FIFA Manager 09? I accidentally bought and downloaded it instead of Football Manager. I think I like it better. Only played the demo of FM though.

Had a good look in the Wigan bargain bucket, but nothing really takes my fancy. Guys like Valencia and Palacios are definitely decent, buy don’t seem worth spending too much money on. Anyone ever worked with either of those players?

Saviola and N’Zog are both decent when called on, but very much second string. With my one up front system, Saviola just isn’t capable of leading the line, and doesn’t seem keen on playing wide either.

With Sunderland, Reading and Wigan all going down there are some fine players that you can snap up with them looking to reduce their wage bill. Especially Sunderland, since they pay too many of their stars a pretty penny. I don’t know which players went where in your game but I suggest the following:
Anton Ferdinand – You need some Englishmen for godsakes! With Coloccini sometimes playing in midfield and Taylor being occasionally inconsistent, he would be fantastic. Mini-Rio lives up to his name.
Pascal Chimbonda – Would be cheap since he’s the wrong side of 30 but he’s a great RB and can play at LB and CB at a pinch too.
Kevin Doyle – I know you’re well covered up front but this man is a god. He consistently scores so many in my games and it’s just ridiculous how good his stats are in this game. If you can get him, I highly suggest you do because with him added to the 2 you have already you’ll be banging them in for fun.
The stats that jump out to me is that besides Jonas and your 2 strikers, no one really scores that many goals for you! I suggest you go and find a good Winger who can tap a few in as well as a poor man’s Frank Lampard to shove into your CM.
Shame about Chantome, I would ship the bugger off and get a good old fashioned get stuck in Robbie Savage to give your midfield some bite!

My Newcaslt have two english, Taylor and Guthrie but hopefully will be able to replace Guthrie with a bit more quality soon!
Nice to see you come 5th, recent poor form has seen me drop to 6th with a game in hand – if I get a point in my game in hand (home against Man City..) I will jump up to 4th, close this year, mainly coz Im only 15 games in!
