Football Lessons Given and Received

By: Daryl | April 2nd, 2009

Managing: Newcastle
Date: October 7th, 2011
Progress: 3rd in Prem after six games, still alive in CL
Addictedness Rating: “A week is a long time in football” (huh?)

Two big games away to Arsenal in the Prem and Anderlecht in the Champions League. One of them we got our collective asses handed to us, the other we did the ass handing. Can you guess which games was which?

vs Arsenal (away)

[click to embiggen]

Played it a little safe by pulling my attacking mid back a little. And after their recent heroics I was hoping Laurito and Fleck would give me the edge. But not a chance. Arsenal had us chasing them all over the place and had three goals before we knew what had happened.

Toulalan and Fabreags absolutely owned the midfield. Hopefully Camacho will be back next time we face the Gooners, so I can send out the Veloso-Camacho defensive midfield shield and see how they deal with that.

Result: L 3-0

That first league defeat leaves me third in the Prem after six games.

Not top, but not too shabby either. No need for an Alan Shearer rescue jobby while I’m in charge.

vs Anderlecht

Champions League Group D Matchday 2

After the Matchday 1 defeat to Inter, this was a must-win. And since you already know that Arsenal have me a football lesson, you’ve probably worked out that we have the Belgians one too.

Belletti and Laurito came off the bench to bury one each and Jonas slotted home a peno. But star of the show was Norwegian man-child Lars Lien, who had an assist, dispatched a free-kick and made 9 out of 9 successful tackles as my DM. Well done young man.

Result: W 4-0

Which leaves CL Group D looking a bit more manageable:

Next up: away to Blackburn and home to Aston Villa. Maybe not too glamorous, but those are you bread and butter Prem games that we have to win if we’re serious about making the top four again.

    Hey Daryl,

Shame that you couldn’t get anything at the Emirates. Toulalan/Fabregas is an awesome CM axis though and they must have ran the show. At least you bounced back with a good win over Anderlecht.

Referring back to RyBer (Ryan Bertrand), his stats don’t really look that good but his performances have been of 7.1ish and higher which for a full back is amazing. Another trick of the FM gods, I am sure. Is he too old to shadow another LB like Enrique(ironic that you’re learning from your substitute)? Maybe you should teach him a few moves or gear his training a bit more towards technical stats because his physical stats are really good.

Daryl, since Pog is left footed, he’s more suited to scoring goals if positioned in the right striked slot, and vice verca. It makes sence if you think about it logically, and FM told me so in the “hints.” Unless you have him set to swap positions with your other striker (which helps make them both harder to mark).

hey just a quick question, has anyone ever had anything like this happen before?

In my second season with Darlington, some random Korean dude takes over my club and gives me shit loads of cash for transfers and wages.

So I had a gun 18yo central midfielder who was being labelled as the next owen hargreaves. He was awesome, ave rating of 7.3 in the championship. Anyway Blackburn came knocking and made an offer of 1 mil pounds, (i paid 250,000 for him) and the random korean dude accepted it as it was an offer the board couldnt refuse.

So my best player, walks out the door for 1,000,000, then 2 days later the clown gives me an additional 27 mil for transfers and additional wages…

I almost wanted to find the nearest Korean businessman and flog the piss out of him out of principle.

    Anyone had this happen before?

First league defeat of the season! If it had to come against anyone, I’m not suprised its Arsenal. Commiserations. Any chance you could post Lien’s card for me to take a look at?

Its because you have been playing for 7 days, if you didn’t get it :p. Shame about Arsenal thumping you, has Pogrebnyak put Newcastle in his favourite teams for you? When I was Man City it took him 4 years to put them in his favourite club, but only a few months when I signed him on my Newcastle save – it was strange.

Then again, maybe because he has Man Utd on his favourite clubs origionally he was less willing to let Man City into his heart.

I’m 90% sure I haven’t played the game on seven consecutive days. Or do you mean the total hours played adds up to seven days. If so, that’s absolutely terrifying.

OK yeah, gametime is 7 days, 18 hours, 42 minutes, so you’re right James. Thanks for that.

And yes, The Pog lists Newcastle as one of his favourite clubs. But he also still lists Man Utd, so not fully convinced of his devotion.

Martin, here’s a screenshot of Lars Lien. Looks like a legend in the making to me.

Daryl… Lien looks like he’s gonna be a monster (and its really rare to find a DM with any aerial skills too, so thats good), but i had a quick question, i have some younger players that have in their coach reports things like “he’s an inconsistent performer” or “doesn’t relish the big games”… is there any way to get that off a player, be it by mentorship or something? or will he always be that way?

Sorry Mustafa, I don’t know the answer to that. Could be just one of those things that improves with age.

    Anyone else know?

I dont think its possible to change things like “doesn’t relish big games”, but “he’s an inconsistant performer” will probaly go as the player gets older.
