Getting Away With It
By: Daryl | July 21st, 2009Based on the responses in the previous post, here’s the team that went out to face WBA:

Laurito put us 1-0 up after just five minutes when he headed home a Jonas cross at the far post and Camacho doubled the lead with a long range shot from a wide angle in the 21st. So, 2-0 up at halftime.
Which is when I did something stupid.
Overimpressed by our total domination of the first half, I used all my substitutions at halftime.
Lewandowski –> The Pog
Marquinhos –> Arshavin (swithing Jonas left so Marq could play right)
Skjelbred –> Diego
I knew this was a stupid idea the moment the second half kicked off. One injury and I was screwed. Plus there were 45 minutes to go.
WBA made me regret it even more by scoring in the 52nd minute, and so I panicked and went more defensive (pulling Skjelbred back to CM, reducing wingers forward runs and the playing a lot narrower).
There were a few hairy moments but we clung to 2-1 until the final whistle. Lesson learned, but three points in the bag.

That leaves me third, next game is at home against second place Arsenal (who in 2012 are largely the same team as today, just more grown up and with Adebayor still there). All kinds of tactical and starting XI decision to be made before that game. Will put those questions up for discussion in the next post.

3 subs at half-time. I can better that. 3 subs five minutes into play.
It was a league game, but it was a league game straight after my first round in the cup which I played my 2nd XI, mostly my youth team. So after realising my mistake, I quickly swapped off my two centre backs (my defence was going to be pummeled, so I’d have a fighting chance), and changed my AMC for my world-class regen. Won it 2-1, with most of my 2nd teamers hugely inspired playing their first league game at home, and a goal each to my AMC and a CB.

Good work Rory!
I’ve always thought FM should have an “Are you sure about this? Yes/No” option before submitting your team.
I’ve done things like giving the reserve keeper a game in the cup and forgetting to switch back plenty of times (though nothing on the scale of what you described above).

Excellent story Rory, and I know exactly where you’re coming from. I’ve not been caught out with Santa Eulalia yet, but the dangers of saving a game after selecting a cup side, then resuming without noticing are ever present.
Daryl, this team is ours and I’m not sure you should be jeapordising results like this (against anyone else this would be fine, but not the Baggies, who must be remorselessly pummelled into the ground). Although it would be funny to see what would happen if you put to a vote: should I make 3 subs at half time?
I’m keenly anticipating how to beat Arsenal, unfortunately FM still hasn’t got a kick them off the park button, but it should, and I suppose hard tackling might be in order.
