Help Me Pick a Team to Face Arsenal

By: Daryl | July 24th, 2009

Big game coming up vs Arsenal at home. We’re third, they’re second (it’s 2012 so Man City have finally spent their way to first place). It’s the 4pm game on Sunday, which means we’ll be on Sky Sports. No pressure then.

Here’s how Arsenal are shaping up:

From previous encounters, Toulalan helps Fabregas pull the strings in midfield and needs to be watched. Let’s hope Theo Walcott doesn’t recover from his fractured wrist in time. That man (he’s 22 now, and I like to imagine he now sports a full beard) is dangerous.

So we’ve got several options as to how we go about this, and – as usual – I’d like your input. Here are the questions:

1. Strategy – Do we stick with 4-1-2-1-2 and attack them? We’re at home, but they’re good. Especially in central midfield. Alternatives are: pulling the AM back to CM to form a 4-1-3-2, or maybe a cowardly 4-5-1 counter-attack. Maybe even match Arsenal with our own 4-4-2. What should we do?

2. Players – Keeper and back four picks itself. Same as last game. Jonas and Arshavin make sense as the wide players given Marquinhos bad form, Diego makes sense as AM, and Laurito has to be one of the strikers (or the lone striker).

After that it gets a bit more complicated. So, based on your answer to question 1…

a) If it’s 4-1-2-1-2 then does Veloso or Camacho start at DM?

If 4-1-3-2 or 4-4-2 then who plays central midfield? Does Diego simply drop back, or do we go with a more orthodox CM?

b) Up front, who should partner Laurito (assuming you agree Laurito should start)? Lewandowski or The Pog? The Pog is the more senior player (he’s acting captain in Coloccini’s absence) and sometimes turns it on for big games, but has hit a bad patch of form. Lewandowski looks more likely to do something right now, but isn’t exactly on fire either.

c) Given his recent useless form, does Marquinhos even deserve a look in?

Here’s a screenshot of the squad, with recent form (last five games).

ps Don’t be fooled by The Pog’s recent form rating. He got a 9.6 in one game, which makes his recent form look artificially impressive. Without that one game he’d be in the mid to low sixes.

    1) Cowardly (pragmatic) 4-2-3-1 Counter – don’t let them play.

    2) This way Veloso and Camacho both play

Diego can then either be a sitting central midfielder (longer range of passing) or straight out AMC.

    3) Lorito is sole player up front

For one, keep a close eye on Nasri, he’s a cheeky bastard and will dribble up and down the field right past you and into your net.

    1. Strategy: pulling the AM back to CM to form a 4-1-3-2, don’t let them control the midfield with Fabregas and Toulalan

    2. Players – Same as last game, for sure, except for:
If you play 4-1-3-2, go with a more orthodox CM than Diego, either a playmaker/passer or have Camacho or Veloso in that roll and try to keep control over the midfield.

    b) I’d start the Pog with Laurito, if he doesn’t produce by half time give him a good talk, then by the 60th sub for Lew.

    c) Given his recent useless form, does Marquinhos even deserve a look in? If you end up leading by 3 goals, bring him in for a morale booster, otherwise definitely not.

I’m not sure I’m to be listened to (my Fulham side are currently going through a very bad patch on my game – 3-0 up at half time and lost 3-4) but here’s my thoughts:

    Why not go for 4-1-3-1-1.
Leave Diego AM and Laurito up front. Then play both Camacho and Veloso (one in the CM role – whoever can play there better, I’d say Camacho). This way the midfield should be able to compete with Arsenal’s, then hope for a swift counter to score. As for Marqiunhos – tell him you intend to rest him, or criticise his form – depending on his reaction he might deserve a late run out.

I’m not sure you if you’ve played this game yet, but I’ll comment anyway (I would have commented sooner, but I’ve just got back from holiday).

I agree with t’OM on the formation. You should play 4-2-3-1 (counter) as this way you can contain them and give them little room to play football.

WIth this formation you can play both Veloso and Camacho to control the play and produce better counter attacks.

If you choose to play a CM, then play Skjelbred who is better suited for that position than Diego. If you play AM, then it has to be Diego as he has the best creative skill.

Up front, start with Pogrebnyak as you said a while ago that Laurito looked useless as a sole striker. However, if Pog does not produce after the half and a good team talk, bring on Laurito.

Looking at Marquinhos, he should not start in this game. Wait until you play some easier opponents to boost his morale, although it is probably worth playing him on the bench and bringing him on if you have a comfortable lead.

Hi pleasant post. I believe these angles might be useful overly. Now the great pick up arguments are the ones that flatter the woman. Straightaway some of the lines might just be in all respectable fun to help break the ice. That is main and it can at last lead to winding up in bed with her at the end of the night. Heck what man doesn’t want that, but learned what to articulate and how to pull it off can take a bit of commit. A rattling pick up note will make you in the door but from there you have to be positive sufficient to keep the conversation active.
