I Disrespected Inverness Caledonian Thistle, But Think I Got Away With It

So you may recall that I sent my full strength team out to face Caley Thistle in a UEFA Cup qualifying round, even though I played Liverpool three days later. I won that leg 3-0 and then got a 1-1 draw out of Rafa’s men. Could be worse, but I clearly showed them too much respect.

So for the second leg I restored the balance by sending a reserves/youth team to Scotland. The only first teamers who played were Steven Taylor, Danny Guthrie and Javier Saviola.

John Fleck was outstanding and Mascio looked good, but everyone else deserved shooting. Steven “clumsy” Taylor gave away his second penalty in two UEFA Cup games and Javier Saviola fulfilled every negative stereotype of a South American player struggling on a rough Scottish pitch.

We lost 2-1 (going through 5-1 (sorry!) 4-2 on aggregate) but the fans still weren’t happy.

One of the problems with FM is that you can’t explain to the fans that “we’ve already won this game so I’m playing the kids”. There definitely needs to be a button for that. I’m still waiting for the groups to be drawn and to discover whether it’s old school UEFA Cup stylee or new-fangled Europa League stylee. Will find out soon.

  No, I’m the idiot. It was a 3-0 W and 2-1 L, so it’s 4-2 on aggregate. It’s been corrected above, and apologies for any confusion.

  This is what I get for skipping a few posts on your blog. My Caley’s first trip to Europe, and I missed it. Good to see we at least won the match at home – something we’re patently unable to do in the SPL.

  yes i want that button as well. Against a league 2 side i put out a bunch of 20 year olds that are all pretty much PRM relegation team level so around 2-3 stars and they win 2-0 comfortably(my strikers for their young age have average finishing but are very fast) and my fans were upset. Other times when ive won the league with 4 games to go i start putting out my reserves mixed with top players to keep them fit for champs league/fa cup and people still complain. That and the fact that i buy like 15 youngsters all around 17-18 and my fans are upset because they look like bad signings cause i havent played em.

  yeah, i hate how after ive already made myself unable to make it out of the group stage BY LOSING TO ZENIT AND ARSENAL 3-1 2 TIMES BECAUSE THEY BEEN PLAYING LIKE CRAP AND… well anyway, it tells me to do everything i can to win the match when im already out!
