I Love it When a Plan Comes Together
By: Daryl | January 18th, 2009
Managing: Newcastle
Date: Feb 21st, 2010
Progress: 7th in Prem after 25 games (but with a game in hand over 6th place Everton, fyi)
It’s always gratifying to see your tactical thingies come off. But it’s extra satisfying when they come off in the Tyne-Wear derby.
vs Sunderland (away) W 2-1
This started badly, with George McCartney scoring in the first minute. But then Jonas (the real Geordie Messiah, if you ask me) did this:
(That’s Lewandowski (Lew? Lewie-Lewie? Lewser?) holding it up, and Jonas dribbling through and selling the keeper a dummy)
Which is exactly what I hoped he’d do now that he’s been given a free role on the right wing and not instructed to go for the byline and cross everytime he gets the ball.
And then there’s Clément Chantôme and Alan Dzagoev. Chantôme is still frustrating me, and playing him in this game was a gamble. But he came good in the derby.
And I love this goal because everyone did exactly what they were supposed to do.
1. Chantome is under instructions to play through balls.
2. The team as a whole is under instructions to play the ball wide.
3. Alan Dzagoev has been instructed to make forward runs from midfield.
And when that all comes together, this is what it looks like:
(That’s Dzagoev playing the short ball to Chantôme in midfield before getting on his bike, Chantôme playing a through ball out wide for Fleck and Fleck finding Dzagoev as he arrives in the box. I love it when a plan comes together.)
vs Derby County (home) W 2-0
One goal for Jonas (a header from a John Fleck cross – Fleck’s been very consistent on the left flank lately – and another from Pavel Pogrebnyak, who reacted well to being left out of the team for Lewandowski lately. Also, finally, a debut for Marquinhos. He arrived from Brazil “severley lacking in match fitness”, so I gave him a game for the reserves (had to arrange a few games vs non-league opposition as reserves are apparently on holiday for the month) in which he scored and then brought him on at HT here. Nothing spectacular, but looked… tricky.
Europa League last 32, first leg vs Atletic Bilbao (home) W 1-0
This was Marquinhos first start, very exciting, and… he got injured in the first five minutes. Nothing serious, but had to take him off. Hope that’s not a sign of things to come.
Stuck with The Pog again here, and he had a great start, squaring for his compatriot Dzagoev to score (arriving late in the box again). But the big Russian spent the rest of the game hitting wild wild shots, and missing a penalty. So The Pog ended the game with a 5.3 rating, which is especially bad considering he got an assist. If you follow my logic.
Here’s the main problem. While the new system of one target man and free-rolling wingers going for goal is basically a success, it doesn’t suit The Pog. Turns out The Pog really isn’t that good with his feet, and most of his goals last season were headers from all those crosses.
Had a word with The Pog and asked him to “stop blasting his shots” so often, and he told me where to stick it.

Don’t want to complain about this too much, but isn’t it a little unrealistic for a striker to insist on only ever blasting shots? And believe me, he only ever blasts shots. Not really sure how to respond to that, other than to start looking for a new target man maybe.

Very nice! Good to see things are looking up!
I’d just like to inform everyone that I’m currently in FIRST PLACE! with 16 games played
Here’s my League Table:

I’m sure it won’t last but I had to brag while I could!
In the beginning of the season I promised Euro Cup qualification through the Prem. Well at this rate it looks like I can pull off CL qualification!Posted from

Yeah, sorry long-promised FM@TheOffside network is taking a while guys. Hopefully it will be worth waiting for.

And Daryl, I think you’re going to be VERY happy with Marquinhos. Kerrison is my leading scorer and he’s only played in European competitions and three prem matches (one of which he came on as a sub, and scored) and he’s got something like 16 goals in 19 games. These Brazilian wonderkids are just that!

jayslick,
Here’s a screenshot of The Pog’s instructions:
http://fm.theoffside.com/files/2009/01/pog-instructions.jpg
As you can see, I pretty much haven’t told him to do anything.
The only thing I can think of changing is maybe asking him to “hold up the ball”, but the real problem is that when he gets a chance – any type of chance – he blasts it.
Sometimes they go in and look great, but often they sail just over or just wide when it looked easy to just roll it in. That said, his shots on target/shots ratio is actually 57/89, so maybe it’s not all the bad. Maybe it just looks worse because he wails those shots so hard.
Since he’s not interested in taking it easy with his shots, I’m going to try asking him to dribble round the keeper and see if he’s interested.

So it’s January and I’m faced with a tough offer from Real Madrid for Zabaleta. I use him as a RB/RWB and sometimes a RM. He’s been really great for me and a starting XI player for sure. He’s young and talented. He’s my only real RB.
Here’s a shot of Real Madrid’s offer:
http://img120.imageshack.us/my.php?image=zabapa4.jpg
They’ve also offered Ruben De La Red, who looks like a good player, but I don’t think he really fits into my squad, I’ve already got multiple M/DM’s…
Here are his stats…
http://img292.imageshack.us/my.php?image=delaredqq3.jpgI think I’m gunna have to reject the offer, but I want to hear what you guys think as well.

Daryl, I just asked Pog to lob the keeper, since he misses a good amount of 1v1’s, and he shut me down. I don’t think he’s really got the composure(10) or dribbling(11) to round the keeper though. Let me know how that goes.

just based on your instructions, id turn his long shots down to rarely, turn his creativity to little, and check and see if your games Pog plays in and see if he isnt getting many offsides, if he isnt, you may be able to crank his forward runs up.
basically, with all his instructions set to mixed, i think your letting him run wild and do whatever he wants, regardless of what your telling him after the game.
try it, see if that gets control of the commie.

Daryl you should start posting videos of your goals with every post.

I have the Pog as well and had struggled with him just blasting away. No matter what I had asked him to do, he just fired at will. About a month ago I asked him to try rounding the keeper and, lo and behold, he has been just ecstatic to give it a try.

Nice to see, in the words of the immortal Ruud Gullit, ‘duh shexy footbull’ come to fruition. Had the same problem with blasting shots regarding Fabian Delph–left it alone and played him deeper in midfield so it’s not as big a deal but he kills me when hits a ball from thirty yards out over the bar with two open men in the box. Got promoted again by the skin of our teeth (4-4 agg. playoff with a 7-5 penalty win, 1-0 in the final), but Ken Bates sold the club and now I have $76 million to spend from my Brazilian owner. Awesome.

Actually regarding the Pog, I would turn creative freedom and through balls up and long shots down. Also turn passing style down to short. Maybe this will change his style more towards passing instead of just slamming the ball towards goal.
Keep trying with the preferred moves. Usually with older players, they don’t allow you to mould them to their will but I’ve had a few cases where persistence got me to change their ways.
Stats wise the Pog should still be banging the goals in and I hope you’re not considering benching him long term or selling him because once you figure out how to get your system to suit him I predict he’ll be enormous for you.

Doing a Newcastle save myself, set the Pog’s forward runs as often and he gets offside about 5 times every match, very frustrating, so I turned that down.
He never seems to score 1vs1’s either.. but as my top scorer with about 20 goals in 30 games and a fans favourite I’ve decided to let him carry on.
Try Martins left attacking midfield, got him playing there and is averaging about 7.40 a match!

Yeah, The Pog is an offside machine. He’s the Russian Pippo Inzaghi.
I’m convinced that there are no tactical insructions to stop him blasting – the man was just born to blast.
But what I will try is repeatedly asking him to either “stop blasting shots” or “try and round the keeper” until he finally gives in.

Got a miniture crisis on my hand! After overperforming amazingly for the second half of the season I managed to come first with Newcastle in their first season.
Now, very impressive I hear you all say (well, I thought so.) But no – now all the champions league teams are unsettling my players! Jonas, Coloccini, Pog, Taylor and more I cant think of are all attracting top clubs and are getting angry at me rejecting the bids for them! Worried how they will perform for me for the upcoming season now!

Not first! that would be amazingly impressive haha, I came 6th , just 4 points off 4th

James,
This same thing happened to me after my first season. Two tactics I used:
1. Don’t flat our reject any bids, just ask for more money. Every time you receive a bid for a player, ask for the amount that you’d actually sell him for. eg, 20m or 35m or something big. Usually the interested club will withdraw their offer. Player won’t be entirely happy, but they seem to take it better than when you flat out reject a bid.
2. Offer some new contracts. When a player signs a new contract, that often deters clubs from continuing their pursuit.

I’ll try that, I’m glad I gave Martins a new contract before transfer window re opened though, would have been pissed if he left me for £13mill! Now he doesn’t have a minimum fee release claus, if any more big boys come in for my players I’ll do like you said and ask for a lot of money!
Tried signing Kuzmanovic, but I think the Fiorentina manager is high or something, he asked for £47million plus Taylor and Jonas – then bidded £11 million for Coloccini! Tried exchanging Coloccini for Kuzmanovic but they rejected it, so I went for a nice cheap dutch player, Schaars or someone – for £3milllion he should be a bargain!
