Let’s Get to Work

By: Daryl | May 25th, 2009

First of all, thanks for all the kind words on the last post. I was more than a little surprised by that to be honest.

Second, welcome to the management team! The new plan is to put all major decisions up for debate here on the blog. We’ll use a combination of questions, options, discussions, polls and everything else. I’m not 100% sure how this is going to work, but it’s going to be fun finding out.

The only thing I’d ask is that everyone tries to stay on topic. For example, if the decision being discussed is: “Who should start up front?” then telling me to sign a new left back isn’t really very helpful. Plus, young Ryan Bertrand is doing a surprisingly good job. So there.

Quick refresher: Our current league situation can be seen here. At the halfway point of 19 games, we’re sitting third and still just about involved in the title race. We’re also in the last sixteen of the Champions League, where we’ll be facing Barcelona in February. Be afraid.

OK, are you ready? Then let’s get to work. Here is my immediate fixture list/schedule:

So we’ve got an FA Cup game away to Watford, who are 12th in the Championship. One week after that we play Man Utd.

For the Man Utd game, I’ll put some tactical options on the table. But for the Watford game, we’ll keep it simple and play the attacking 4-1-2-1-2 that’s pretty much been our default. It looks like this:

We played three days earlier (that 1-0 win over Bolton) and play Man Utd next (albeit seven days from now). So, we have some tired legs in the squad. I’d love to give some fringe players a run-out, but don’t want to weaken the team too much. It’s the eternal cup conundrum.

Click here to take a look at the current state of my squad:

So, here are my questions for the FA Cup game vs Watford:

1. Given or Akinfeev in goal? I like to give Given a run-out, but don’t want to annoy Akinfeev.

2. Bertrand or Enrique at LB? Enrique needs games, but Bertrand’s on a roll.

3. With Jonas injured, who plays wide right?

4. Do I try and work Sneijder, Wijnaldum, Lien and Dzagoev into my midfield? All these youngsters need games, but I don’t want to weaken my team too much.

5. Who plays up front? Laurito, Lewandowski and Bo are injured. Marquinhos is off doing Olympic qualifying with Brazil U-23s. Only first team options are The Pog and Arshavin, but should I give young Thomas Knudsen a debut?

Let me know what you think. And if anyone wants to answer those questions by sharing what their line up would be, then that works too.

Hey, I haven’t commented before, but I always read your blog, so I am finally commenting!!! Here are the answers to your questions:

    1. Man, I think Given is a great keeper, but Man.Utd. is forever Man.Utd., so Akinfeev should be the best choice.

    2. What a question, I think you should know my answer…Remember, it MANCHESTER UNITED…

    3. I think Dzagoev is up to the job…

    4. I think Dzagoev is the one that is more up to the job, so try maybe two youngsters and another guy at midfield.

    5. As I can see, the Pog isn’t doing so good lately (6,50 rating) so here are two options: First one, go see how Thomas Hudsen is doing, I mean, in training, if he’s doing good, then try him, second option: As i have already said, the team you’re facing is MANCHESTER UNITED, so maybe a debut guy won’t be up t the job, so just try the Pog and put the youngster in the bench…

Hope yo write what you think of what I’ve said as first as you can….

For the Watford game you should try and rest up some players for United. I would say play Given and Enrique, possibly playing Arshavin up right and trying out the new striker with Pog on bench. For the midfield, a streak is a wonderful thing, but I’ve found nothing more deadly to one than simple fatigue. One more substitution though should be enough considering you have a full 7 days until next match. Probably target your most tired player among the AM, DM and rotate them out.

    1. Keep Akinfeev, last thing you want is a ticked off keeper.
    2. Enrique. Sitting out a match when he’s relatively tired won’t do Bertie’s form too much harm.
    3. Maybe drop Arshavin back there and then stick Knudsen up top? Its that or Snijder, I think.
    4. Well with a man down anyway, it could be a good time to give Snijder a game or two out right, but I wouldn’t change too much, maybe bring someone from the bench if its going ok.
    5. Like I said I’d either go with Arshavin/Pog or drop Arshavin back and play Knudsen.

    For the Watford game

    1. Given – Not much of a drop from Akinfeev
    2. Enrique – It’s one cup mathc, it won’t put Ryan of that much
    3. I’d play Wij in right, assuming he can play it correctly
    4. I’d give Lien a go, and try to slot Dzagoev in as well but wouldn’t be upset if he didn’t make it
    5. Start Knudsen/Pog, and sub early if necessary

I’m hearing support for Given and Enrique starting, which I’m OK with.

Samir, I should make clear that this is for the Watford game. Man Utd isn’t until the game after.

I like the idea of starting Pog and Knudsen up front, which seems to have some support.

I should mention that Camacho has been playing his way back to form after his injury, and finally got a 7.3 vs Bolton (after a series of 6.somethings). So the plan is to start Camacho at DM. So maybe it makes sense to give him 60 and (assuming we’re winning) sub him for Lien at 60 minutes.

Arshavin could handle a game on the bench, so maybe Diego at AM (needs some minutes) and Wijnaldum at RM?

Also, the obvious answer looks like resting Fleck (94% condition) and playing Sneijder on the left.

i think you should give a start to sniejder if you give him a run of games i’ve seen his form become really impressive.

    1. Given
    2. Enrique
    3. Wij
    4.youngsters
    5.Knud/Pog

I really don’t think you need to play many first teamers, your backups are all probably better than their starters.

    1) Akinfeev
    2) Enrique just to rest the young kid
    3) Schneider, but reduce his forward runs and put his crossing to from deep but increase his through balls. THis should counter his lack of pace.
    4) Hopefully you will control the game, so play 2/3 off the bench and bring a 1/2 on in the 50-55th minute for a solid run out.
    5) Knudsen must play.

OK, so based on the above…

Given in goal, Enrique at LB.

Camacho at DM (with Lien coming on later if all goes well).

Sneijder at LM (with decreased forward runs and crossing from deep – thanks t’OM, love that idea)

    Wijnaldum wide right.

Digeo at AM (with Dzagoev to come on if all goes well)

The Pog and Knudsen up front (with Arshavin to come on if Knudsen sucks)

    Everyone relatively happy with that?

Now I feel personally responsible for how Schneijder plays (and spelling his name correctly), and I don’t know if this is a good or bad thing.

Does anyone else find themselves secretly wanting someone they didn’t vote for to play poorly (I’m looking at you Shay Given). A little selfish, but I’m loving this interactivity thing. It’s like myfootballclub.co.uk, only better as we are not shafting real fans and real people. That and there’s a dozen of us not 1000s.

Also, I’d like to be the first to say, congratulations Daryl, under you, NEWCASTLE DIDN’T GET RELEGATED!
