So, What Next?
By: Daryl | March 21st, 2009
So I’m finally in the Champions League (qualification pending). And have built myself a pretty decent squad. I think.
But how I buy and sell this summer feels important. If I get it right, I’ll be able to make a decent stab at the CL and establish myself in the top four at home. Maybe even a title challenge. I said maybe.
But before I go ahead and start making changes, I figure it’s worth a quick review of my playing squad, sharing exactly who did what in the 2010/11 season, and asking for advice about how to proceed.
With all the following images, just click to enlarge. And click back in your browser to get back (obviously).
Here’s my full first tea squad, by position (with values on the right)

First team squad by average rating:

Top scorer was Lewandowski with 21 in 51 games. Followed by The Pog with 17 from 34 (one in two, and he missed five months through injury).
Top man for assists was Jonas with a ridiculous 23, including 13 in the Prem which put him joint top with Theo Walcott. Good work sir.
Coloccini, Enrique, Jonas and Rusol led in the average ratings, but nothing really spectacular. Even Colo only averaged 7.18. Although ratings as a whole seemed to go up after I switched tactics for the last 10 games or so.
Based on the bove, my feeling is that I still need a new striker. The Pog is quality, if a bit limited. Lewandowski and Bendner are both OK but not stellar. Marquinhos seems better suited to playing on the wing or as attacking mid than up front. So maybe a big money bid from someone like Keirrison (now at Marseille) would be worth a go. He wouldn’t come cheap, but he looks the business. Maybe I could even go after Foti again?
Shay Given has been quality, and is now Newcastle’s all-time leader in appearances. But Igor Akinfeev’s contract is up soon, so I might try and get him on the cheap. Given’s a legend, but Akinfeev still looks like an upgrade to me. And he’s 10 years younger.
There’s a story behind the “bid” symbol next to Andrey Arshavin. At the end of the season, the usual big money teams – Liverpool, Chelsea, Barca, Real etc were linked with Marquinhos, Camacho and Arshavin. Marq and Camacho showed some loyalty and pronounced themselves happy to stay.
Arshavin… not so much:

So, I tried to part exchange him for Chelsea’s out of favour but brilliant looking left back Juan Manuel Vargas. Nice try, but looks like Real Madrid are going to gazump me with a £16.5m bid.
It’s OK, I’m happy enough with Jose Enrique (though I could do with a little backup).
Two other options I’m looking at are Christian Maggio to give me a threat from right back, and Miguel Veloso, to take some DM pressure off of Ignacio Camacho.
Last but not least, there are some staff contracts expiring. Dennis Wise has been taking £:10,000 per week as a scout, despite not being very good at it. So the second his deal runs out I’m kicking the little fella out on to the street.
More questionable is Chris Hughton. I could definitely get a better assistant manager at this point, but caan’t help feeling a little loyalty to CH these days. Has anyone ever replaced their ass man when things were going OK? Do the players react? Or do they not even notice?
So, there it is. No idea how much I’ll have to spend, but should be at least something. Any advice feedback on how to proceed here much appreciated.

Wow, Jonas is an assist machine. What instructions do you give him to get that out of him?

How pricey s Benzema at the moment? If hes within your range, hes a definite buy at striker. If you got him you could get rid of two of your current strikers.

How does fiorillo compare to akinfeev? Also, is Anderson martins any good in 2011? I got him instead of fazio and I’m curious how he turns out. For a striker I would get either rossi or benzema, but balotelli is supposed to be really good by then. And would you suggest camacho, and if so, how much did you get him for? I can’t decide between him or obi mikel, toulalan, or montolivo.

Foti doesn’t get much better, although he will score by the bunch from corners.
For defensive depth, Onyekachi Apam can play anywhere along the back four. Might be a little pricey, however.

Weston,
I can’t find anyone named Anderson martins. Here’s a screenshot of a search for “Anderson”. Let me know if he’s any of those.
I heart Camacho, but had to pay £17.5m for him, which is pretty pricey. I might not manage to sign him for myself, but Miguel Veloso looks like a great option.

Aaron,
Benzema is at Real Madrid and worth £34.5m, so that’s a no go!
Geoff,
I had a bid accepted for Foti, but so did Roma and he decided to go there (even though I offered slightly more in wages).
Keirrison was a bit pricey (O’M wanted £25m) but think I might have managed to get Frederico Laurito for £13m, who impressed me so much playing for Udinese. Just waiting on a work permit.

Tom,
I used to play with very attacking wingers, so Jonas’ instrtuctions were: “all-out attack, forward runs, run with ball, cross from anywhere, free role”.
But now he’s more like a traditional winger with “three-quarters attack, forward runs, run with ball”.

when i replaced my ass man, my players didn’t seem to notice, but they seemed a lot happier when he did team talks and stuff. valter di salvo from real madrid. he’s only a fitness coach but def able to make the step up to ass man if you see his attributes.
i would say your main needs are right back and striker for sure, but i think right back is more urgent for you. players age quick so you don’t know how beletti will be next year and even if he’s good, his sense of fitness will def be lacking.
also if you can get akinfeev, you should. he’s better than given, younger, and you can probably fetch a good price if you sell shay.

I would look at getting a bit bigger in the CM. You have Camacho who is a good player but quite small. A big strong (tall and with some build) CM will help you out alot… maybe someone in the Veira mould. As for strikers, Keirrison is great but maybe a Cassano might spice things up and he can help out as ML as well.

lass diarra can play both right back and central mid just like belletti, so get him! and about martins, i have my game on a large database so he probably doesnt exist on your game, i got him from vitoria. but the game does do funny things, in one of my friends saves, molinaro doesnt exist, and verhoeven (oooohhhh PIZZA!)isnt in my game.

my policy has always been, from the beginning, to establish great starters and good young depth in the back line, so I’d make that a priority.
Also, would it kill you to grab an englishman or two?

Laurito is dirty. I’m in the 2016/2017 season, and he has scored 50 goals in 75 league games for me, and has an even more ridiculous rate from internationals. Do it.

Stephen, I’m trying, I really am. Managed to sign a young English left back/left mid from Chelsea named Ryan Bertrand. He’s 21, fast and talented. But he’ll only be a backup to Enrique.
Also have a bid on for Jagielka, who’s unhappy at Man City (not playing).
Other than that, options are limited. Gabbi Agbonlahor is still at Villa, but they want silly money for him.

You should definitely buy Miguel Veloso, he is great. Laurito is very good too. Try to get Federico Fazio; he is a world-class centre back and if he is still at Sevilla he has an acceptable release clause.

Good choice in Frederico, I bought him last season and highly recommend him. My tip would be to look for young regens, there should be some pretty ones appearing in your game by now, lots appear to be dutch or France, so I’d suggest scouting them heavily

Definitely look into Akinfeev. On my Chelsea game, Cech buggered off to R. Madrid in 2011 for 18m, and I snapped up Akinfeev for 10m. Needless to say, he’s been unreal, especially in Big Four games!

i was gonna suggest Laurito as well… and if you’re still looking for a left back, try to get joe mattock or leighton baines, because both are great young players… also, i have a question for you, who are your “home-grown” players for european competitions? i sold a lot of my guys, and i ended up having to pick 2 kids from my youth team to fill the “trained at club” requirement…

Aleandro Rosi is a player that can do a great job in a lot of positions, he would solve both wing back problems, and be a decent back up all over the shop. I think Maggio would be a decent signing too. Daniele Dessena is another player who has always been good to me. Falcao of River Plate is a fantastic striker for about €8 million, but he may have moved on

beevers could be decent cover for your dc’s and he’s english…if arshavin goes..angel di maria was an assist machine for me in serie a from the left

If Arshavin scampers off, check in on Udinese. I’m not sure if Alexis Sanchez is still there, but he is quality. A step up from Arshavin if you ask me. A bit on the small side, but he’s quick with really nice technique. Finishing isn’t bad either. I think he’s listed as AML/R, FC. So he can play both wings or up front. Worth a look.

Veloso is a great sign if you can get him. One of best attributes is his corner kick ability. Based on some other recommendations, I set the Corners to go into the six yard box, my best header/jumper to challenge keeper and my 2nd best to near post flick on. I have averaged 15-20 goals a season off of corner kicks in league play and Veloso has been a huge reason because of pinpoint accuracy.
