Spot the Difference
By: Daryl | March 30th, 2009Apologies for the brief hiatus, was licking my wounds after TSO handed me that first defeat.
A league game at home to West Brom looked like the ideal pick me up….
vs WBA (home)

Lesson learned from my last game, I gave both Maggio and Bertrand a go in midfield, which also allowed me to give Jose Enrique and Steve Taylor a start, in case they started grumbling.
Veloso didn’t play against Inter (ineligible) but I’d rushed him back from injury to face Chelsea, so gave Lien the start and put Fleck ahead of him. Frederico Federico Laurito finally got a start up front, and repaid me with a hat-trick.
Take a look and spot the difference.
Feels like I’ve finally got set pieces sorted then. John Fleck is the man to take them and Frederico Federico Laurito is the man to head them in.
Result: 3-0
And that keeps me top after five games.
vs Blackburn (away)
Carling Cup 3rd Rnd
I’ve taken the Carling Cup very seriously in the past. Mostly because I genuinely wanted to win it. But seems the interesting thing about the CC is that once you’ve won it, you lose interest. Especially if you’ve got a Champions League campaign to think about.
It’s not that I suddenly think it’s worthless, more that I’ve got a big squad and the CC is the perfect competition to give the fringe fellas a game, eg playing Shay Given in goals.

Not my strongest XI, but should have been good enough to get a result I reckon. We were actually two goals down after 35 minutes, but came back through a Fan Bo header (he’s 5′5″ and he beat Christopher Samba in the air) and a John Fleck penalty. Unfortunately we were still celebrating when Roque Santa Cruz got his second.
Result: L 3-2
Next up, two big big games: Arsenal away in the Prem, followed by Anderlecht away in the Champions League.

“give the fringe fellas a game, eg playing Shay Given in goals”
Don’t think that will go down well with Given. He might just smack you in the face.

Thanks SP. That would explain why he never looks up when I shout his name.

Dhaw,
Somehow, Given is still cool with this. We’re only ten games into the season though, so will likely have to deal with it at some point.

Hey Daryl,
Great as always. You’ve made great signings. I pimp Akinfeev at the moment and no joke, he will be your keeper and be damn good at it until 33-34 at the very least. I’ve always wanted to try Maggio but never got the chance, looks like he’s worth the gamble!
The one I’m really surprised at is Ryan Bertrand. Jose Enrique isn’t exactly the sloppiest left back in the world so I’m surprised a youngster signed on a free can usurp him. Can you give us a look at his stats? Are you pleased with him? He has never amounted to anything in any of my games so I find it strange that he’s starting for you.
Keep it up, I always love your game!

Colin,
Yeah, Bertrand has surprised me too. Signed him as a backup to Enrique really, but now Enrique’s going to have to wait if he wants his place back. Here’s a screenshot of Bertrand’s stats.
