Steve Harper vs Obafemi Martins: Two Men Quarrel, One Man Leaves
By: Daryl | December 9th, 2008
As mentioned earlier, there’s trouble in the Newcastle dressing room. Apparently Steve Harper finds Obafemi Martins “impossible to work with”. Basically, the back-up keeper doesn’t like the star striker’s ‘tood, and says that one of them has to go.
Here’s the dilemna:
On one hand – Oba Martins is pacy goal machine who’s in the first eleven every week while Steve Harper is my easily replaceable reserve keeper.
On the other hand – Oba Martins is a scumbag (not in real life, say The Offside lawyers) who repeatedly asked for a move in January and only bothers turning up on Saturdays to show Alex Ferguson what a good signing he’d be. Martins also has a £13m minimum fee release clause and refuses to sign a new contract. Meanwhile Steve Harper is Newcastle through and through, never complains about being backup keeper and even signed a new long term contract worth £5,000 less per week when financial times were hard this year.
So who should go?
None of this mattered while Shay Given was fit, because I could just leave Harper on the bench and not worry about it. Martins could score goals while Harper scowled at him from the dugout. But now Shay Given has torn his hamstring while sprinting in training (not sure why he was doing that, but what’s done is done) and it’s decision time.
…
After some pretty serious thought over a cup of tea (I literally pondered this while the kettle was boiling, suggesting a worrying disconnect between myself and reality) I decided “screw Steve Harper.”
Young Dutch goalie Tim Krul is almost as good, and more match fit too as he’s been playing regularly for the reserves. And if I dropped Martins then there’s really no one with enough pace to replace him [note to self: sign more strikers this summer].
So Harper gets left out in the cold and Martins gets to stay despite his terrible ‘tood. For now.
But come the summer, it might be time to get rid of Martins before there’s any further unrest.

Why did you sell Owen again…?

Also, isn’t Newcastle full of unused STs?

Owen was injured and on a 125k a week contract that ran out in summer ‘09. So Newcastle’s financial situation made Milan’s 6.8m bid too good to turn down.
I sold Ameobi to Norwich and sent Xisco on loan to Ajax (600k for a season long loan). That just leaves Mark Viduka, who’s just getting back from an 8 month injury, Robert Lewandowski who’s OK but not stellar and Vaklav Kadlec, who’s a genius but only 16.

Oh, and Sebastian Abreu. But what I really need is another striker with Martin’s pace. Will shop around in the summer. Either for a replacement or a backup.

Well, I play Fifa Manager series and I know that Football Manager is much more realistic so it won’t be as easy to get players (although it’s not easy in Fifa M either).
I would recommend Agbonlahor. You said it yourself, he is really fast. He is also young and a good finisher. Besides him I would recommend Niang or Gomis as pacy but good strikers, but I assume you would have to sell Martins to afford any of these players. How much is Martin’s market value? And how much could Viduka go for? What happened to Smith?Posted from

Thanks Hawk, I’ll put those three on my shortlist. Martin’s market value is about 9m, and he has a 13m minimum fee release clause. so that’s probably what I’ll end up getting for him. Viduka’s contract expires in the summer so he’ll go for nothing. Not a bad thing as he’s 33 and on a big wage. Forgot to mention Smith earlier. Sold him to WBA for 3.5m. He’s been useless for them (except for when he played against me) so doesn’t seem like bad business.

I laughed out loud at the screwing of Steve Harper. You made the choice I’d have made, knowing it was probably the wrong one in real life.

I don’t know if it’s in Football Manager, but a French winger/striker/CF called Monnet-Paque has a release clause of 1.4 million in his contract in FM09. And it’s not a thing that developed in game. It’s there at the start of the game. Always. So might want to look into that. A good young talent that could develop well. (according to my scouts…)

I would have gone with selling Martins.
Unmotivated and unhappy strikers are next to useless.
But that’s me in my terrible approach to the game… AhahaPosted from

You couldn’t get Niang for anything less than 20 million. I’ve tried.

If you end up needing a young, cheep defender, look for Lorenzo Gargano.
18 years old owned by Padova. Looks pretty promising. I’m currently scouting him because some of his values are blank. From what I can see he’s a very versatile kid, can play anywhere on the defensive line and if needed can play as left or right wb. once scouted I’ll put up a picture if anyone wants to see.Posted from
