Aargh!

This had never happened to me before. And I’ll be honest, I freaked out a bit.

First things first, who’s to blame? I’m blaming two things:

1) The new patch: 9.2.0. I hadn’t had any problems before that point.
2) Steam. When a new patch comes out, best policy is always to wait until you start a new game. Basically, installing a patch and continuing with a game started pre-patch is asking for trouble. Computers are rubbish like that. But Steam downloaded and installed the new patch automatically. Grrr.

So I panicked for a bit.

But after reading a few forums – this one was the best – I found a solution.

Apparently if you have “3 file rolling autosave” selected in your preferences, then the game will save backup copies as you go. A quick look revealed two files titled: Newcastle (backup) and
Newcastle (v02), both of which loaded. Phew.

So bit of advice based on what I read. Under “Options” and “Preferences” make sure “3 file rolling autosave” is selected, and also make sure “Compress save games” is NOT selected, as apparently this increases the chances of your save file being corrupted.

I know this also happened to David Appleton who left a few comments here (and is doing better than me with his Newcastle team). Did you get yours fixed David?

good thing you got it working again!
Where are your game saves located? I can’t find mine. I want to make my own back up just in case…

The saved game is in steam/steamapps/common/FM09/games I believe is the correct path off the top of my head. The easiest thing to do is simply copy and paste the file on to a external drive just in case, but as Daryl said, make sure you have that setting turned on, its a life saver sometimes.

I didn’t install via steam though, so I don’t have any of that. I’m pretty sure i have the rolling save on, im going to check now, but still. After every season I’m going to make another backup just to be sure.

Daryl what’s the deal with Rodney Sneijder? You bought him and it seems like you could use him right now.

I was waiting for, “Oh damn, my game crashed. Guess I’ll have to start over with a club that doesn’t suck.”

I might have to grab this when the season is over and I start getting the itch to watch football.

    Marlon,

I signed Sneijder, but Ajax had already sent him on a season long loan to Omniworld. So he won’t be wearing black and white until the 2010/11 season.

Sucks because I could definitely use him, especially now I’m playing more men in midfield. But maybe it’ll be good for the lad to play another season of first team football for Omniworld and then come to St James’.

    mele419,

Try searching your C drive for a folder called “Sports Interactive”. Open that, then open the “Football Manager 2009″ (or “Worldwide Soccer Manager 2009″) folder, and then open the “games” folder.

Or, you could just search your C drive for the title of your saved game. eg, if you saved your game as “mancity” just search for that.

Have the same problem as Craig. Had a great 1st season, 2nd season almost done (no lost games), a class squad, great buys and sales (got £18M for Carrick and £20M for Hargreaves). And now: Game can’t load. The game isn’t even located in the games folder. I found a similar named file in the old demo folder, but it wouldn’t load either. Man, am I down now…
