The Search for the Mythical Pacey Centre Back
By: Daryl | March 24th, 2009
Russian Super-Keeper Igor Akinfeev finally signed on the dotted line, and all it took was a bit of flattery. Well, that plus £95,000 per week.
I feel a bit like I’ve betrayed Shay Given. Like one of those guys that ditches their 35 year old wife for a 25 year old girlfriend once they get successful. But £4m for Akinfeev? Couldn’t say no.
And Shay has taken it extremely well so far. Hasn’t even mentioned it in fact. I suspect he’s heavily in denial.
Now all that’s left to solve is my centre back dilemma…
I have £25m left to spend. And based on feedback from the comments, most people think I should spend it on defenders.
I’m not sure whether that’s because I really need better defenders, or because this is Newcastle we’re talking about and everyone’s used to Newcastle’s defence being consistently in need of reinforcement.
In fact I’d argue that Coloccini (who I’m considering making my new captain) and Rusol were two of my best players last year, in terms of average rating. But here’s a look at all four of my central defenders, to give you an idea of what I’m working with (click to enlarge, as usual)
Looking at those guys, I’m inclined to be pretty happy. The only way we could improve is to sign someone with blistering pace, and finally put an end to the burnings I’ve received from speedy strikers like Fernando Torres and Robinho.
Cristian Zapata would be ideal:

But for £22m? It’s just too much.
Other targets were Micah Richards (Man City not selling, I offered as high as £35m) and Joseph Yobo (30 years old, but Everton want £10m).
What do you think? Stick with what I’ve got? Splash out that £22m? Keep looking?
In the meantime I played a few hastily arranged friendlies (forgot to ask new ass man Neil Sullivan to set me up, so had to do it myself at short notice.) Nothing major to report, except that Frederico Laurito looked good alongside The Pog (before getting himself injured for two weeks), Christian Maggio looked solid at right back, Ryan Bertrand pucnhed well above his weight at left back and Igor Akinfeev is yet to concede a goal.
Last but not least, the draw for the Champions League 3rd qualifying round has been made.

Hamburg (or HSV if you prefer) it is. Could have been worse (could have been AC Milan) but definitely could have been better. First leg is at home, and up next. Fingers crossed.

22m is a lot for Zapata, but i know from experience that he has loads of potential. Curse me out Magpies, but I don’t ever have a lot of faith in S Taylor, and typically offload him when I get the chance. You could fetch a pretty penny for him too. I know he probably has a Newcastle tattoo, but I’d ship him off if you need to make room.
If your board didn’t want you to spend money, they wouldn’t have given it to you… hehe

Have you tried looking at Federico Fazio of Sevilla? I bought him, and he had a “Minimum Fee Release” clause of 14,000,000 pounds, and i used it to purchase him, and he has been AMAZING for me, and I’ve been playing him at defensive mid, and when he’s played center back, he’s been a stud, i took a screen cap of his abilities, you should check him out

also, check out a guy named Eduardo (real name Eduardo da Silva Nascimento Neto, for search purposes), and he is also pacy, and can play any position on the left side, as well as center back (natural) and def. mid and center mid… a very good and useful player

Daryl: I had a similar dilemma, but after reading up on airfutbol.com I discovered a very large and quick center back from Denmark. Mathias Jorgensen, a Danish u-21 player. Check him out here: http://fm5.theoffside.com/fm09/player-stats-part-2.html
He plays for Copenhagen, and although you are now a year in head of me, he may still be a good pickup. He had 14 in acceleration, 15 in agility, 15 in pace and a 17 in strength. Defensively he could use work, but he has the right Physical and Mental attributes. Check him out, otherwise you will have to stump up for Zapata, who is a very quality player even at 22 million. You must have someone you can throw in on a trade to lower the transfer fee?

Have tried both Fazio and Jorgensen.
Fazio is still at Sevilla, but his release clause is now £30m, and they rejected my offers all the way up to £20m.
Jorgensen is at West Ham where he’s doing OK but nothing special. Currently valued at £5.25m, which means he’d probably cost close to £10m, and he’s not quite worth it. He’s only averaging high sixes with West Ham.
Have looked at Eduardo before, and am a little concerned that he only has 14/20 for jumping. Worried he’d get destroyed in the air.

To be honest mate, you only had 34 against last season. Which looks as though was 3rd-4th best defence in the league after a quick glance.
I’m of the opinion that if it’s not broke don’t fix it.
Do what i do in those situations and spend big on classy 16-19 y/o who you can loan out.
Im going to difer from most people and say that you should search the globe for the worlds best 16-19 year olds!!!

Spring for Zapata. To good not to take.

Get Zapata. He’s absolute class, and he was able to almost singlehandedly keep a clean sheet during the Champions League final with me when my other good center back was injured and I had to play my defensive midfielder.
The only problem with him seems to be that he forges negative relationships with his teammates, I had to let him go because he was fueding with Casillas.
