Transfer Deadline Day
By: Daryl | February 18th, 2009
It’s transfer deadline day 2011, and after The Pog’s horrific injury (his calf muscle looks like sliced bacon) I’m one striker short, with not much money to spend and just one FM09 day to decide.
FA Cup 4th Rnd vs Middlesbrough (home) W 3-1
- – - – - – - – Given – - – - – - -
Taylor – Coloccini – Rusol – Enrqiue
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - –
- – - Skjelbred – - Camacho – - – -
Jonas – - – - Diego – - – - Arshavin
- – - – - Lewandowski – - – - – -
4-2-3-1, lots of width, short passing, slow tempo; offside trap, high defensive line.
Another FA Cup game, another North-East derby. And somehow Gareth Southgate is still employed at Middlesbrough, despite insisting on a 4-1-4-1 formation with an elderly Andriy Shevchenko as lone striker.
Marquinhos was looking a bit tired, so Diego got his first start. He wasn’t spectacular, but he was steady. A 7.2 and 38/42 completed passes. In fact, with Diego, Skjelbred and Camacho I now have the perfect midfield trio for my short passing game. The three combined completed 115/129 passes as we dominated this game.
Arshavin and Skjelbred got our first two goals but Lewandowski had another off day (rating 5.6). B.A.C. (Big Andy Carroll) came off the bench and scored a tap-in to make it safe, but a little concerned about my striking options.
It’s Jan 31st 2011 right now, which means there’s just one day left in the transfer window. I have £4.3m to spend after getting rid of Tomas Kadar, with possibly another £3m on the way if I manage to sell Danny Guthrie (had bids from Hull and Birmingham accepted).
I’ve done some searching around, and my options boil down to this:
1. Nicklas Bendtner – £3.6m
2. Roman Pavlyuchenko – £3.5m
3. Franco di Santo – £4.2m
I’m not too fond of Di Santo’s stats, and don’t see him doing much for me to be honest. So he’s my least favourite. Bendtner and Pavlyuchenko are actually very similar stats wise, with Bendtner having the slight height advantage but Pavlyucenho being a more rounded and experienced player.
Bigger problem is that the long term plan is still to eventually sign Salvatore Foti as my target man. So anyone I sign here is ultimately a stop-gap with no long term future. Part of me thinks it would be smarter to keep the £4m or so and spend it on someone I really want in the summer (ie: Foti).
Maybe I can get through the season with just Lewandowski, B.A.C. and Marquinhos.
So, poll time again:

If you’re not sold on the others, don’t buy. You could always slot Arshavin up front and play through balls to him as opposed to having him hold the ball up. You still have options.

on the other hand, Bendtner is young still, and you could move him for a profit over the summer.

wouldnt pav work well with pog and arshavin seeing as they are all russian? although bendter is still the better buy…

Actually, Pog lists Pav as one of his favourite peeps.
But with my one striker system (which I don’t plan on changing given the amounty of AMs I’ve amassed) there isn’t room for them to play together.

If you want to buy one of those guys with a view to possibly selling in the summer then I’d get Bendtner.
He’s a good striker and should play well for you. If he does play well but you still want to get Foti in the summer then there’s a chance you could sell him for more than you bought him for. Just an idea…

I think Pav is the best choice out of the actual strikers to buy, as it won’t upset morale bringing him in and so on because of the russian connection.
I would be tempted to just stick Arshavin up top though, you do have the strength in midfield to do it, i think.

i would definitely go with bendter, in my arsenal season he is a solid back up for adebayor, and its only the 08/09 season in my game, so i’m sure he’s gotten better. looks like he got cheaper too.

@ Rob.
True. And I’ve never really given Marquinhos a fair shake as a striker, which I can do now I’ve got Diego to play AM.
Looks like it’s between Bendtner and sticking with what I’ve got. Will leave the poll up overnight and see what happens.

do pog or pav (kinda catchy nicknames arent they?)play any other positions?

although i just remembered, it doesnt matter that they like each other b/c they will never play together if pog is out and you’ll sell pav in the summer…. plus, will whoever you buy let you sell them again so soon? all the players that i start the game off with but were new signings that season before i became boss won’t leave b/c they say that they just joined. and if you get pav and sell him just as pog returns he’ll be none too happy. (sissoko got upset when i sold iaquinta and they dont even list each other as friends)

Get a guy called Nikola Kalinic from Hajduc I think. Great striker and very young. However its 2011 so someone already bought him probably. But If you want a good tall guy, get Milevskiy from Dynamo Kiev, if he’s still there.

Both Arshavin and Marquinhos have done good jobs up front for me (also with Newcastle), though you’ll have to change your style of play to match them. I think save the money, and wait for the summer and Foti.

You could have a look at John Carew.
He’s certainly a tall bloke.
