sunderland_633800542281260000Well, it seems like the Arsenal job is no longer on the table. All the better, since my ambition is to be a manager, not a babysitter. Wenger can keep his boys for now.

After being courted by a number of high profile clubs including Liverpool, Valencia, Newcastle, and QPR, I’ve decided to go to work for Sunderland, mostly because there’s a dude named ‘Steed’ on the team. That’s got a lot of jokes in it, I feel, although I can’t come up with one right now. Also, as Mr. /Ms. Ish pointed out in the comments, it’s a nice mid-level club, fitting because Daryl’s club was Newcastle.

Here’s the first team as it appears in the demo:

Untitled

I haven’t done much of an analyses yet, but it’s fairly obvious the strength of the team is in the midfield pairing of Cana and Cattermole. I may need to pick up someone as a backup, but I feel I have my two starters there. Both are strong, aggressive, and hardworking, and though lacking a bit in creativity, I feel they can go up against the best of them.

As far as the guys up top go, I feel we’ll have to pick up another striker to go with Darren Bent in the starting lineup. I’d consider playing Frazier Campbell, but he’s too similar a player to Bent, at least according to the FM attributes. At 21 though, I imagine him being a good bet for the future and he’ll probably see a lot of action over the season. Kenwyne Jones can stay as backup, but all he really brings to the table is an aerial presence. I don’t want to bank on him doing much for the team. I think we need to pick up a forward with some creativity, as it’s lacking in the team overall.

The defence is going to need a lot of reinforcement if we’re going to be competitive at all in the league. If I had a bit of cash, I’d replace every single person including Craig Gordon in goal. Realistically, I think we at least need a new first choice right back, and another central defender.

I have yet to advance any time in the demo. Can’t bring myself to click that button knowing the full version comes out tomorrow. Seems a waste. Anyways, Sunderland starts me off with a transfer budget of $21.5 million if I promise a top half finish, which is the very least we should aim for. Anyone have recommendations on how to spend that cash come tomorrow?

A left back. What happens if George (Harrison-Paul) MacCartney gets injured.

What promising youngsters are there? Anyone OK in the reserves?

    Yea dude, abandon ship.

    t’OM,

Either the demo doesn’t have the reserve and youth squads in it, or I was too stupid to find them last night, so I have no idea. But yea, we need a left back…

    t’OM,

In real life Roma is having some financial crisis but it makes no sense to see Sunderland start with 21.5 million ? How is that even realistic ?

    NC,

Once a Romanista, Always a Romanista and no way I am managing those ladri’s (juve).

It’s going to be very interesting start for me with Roma. The game is out today and I haven’t yet got a chance to download it from Steam but by night I should be a proud owner of FM 2010.

    Forza Roma.

I reckon you’ll need a new left back (possibly try for Erik or Nicky Shorey as they have already been in the prem) and a right winger as cover for steed (possibly saivet as he’s one for the future or Dos santos from Tottenham as he seems to want competitive football). Should be interesting to manage sunderland. Just downloading FM2010 as we speak and I reckon i’ll be tryin my luck with Blackburn. Good luck with your campaign.

Guys, I just bought it and it’s great!!! Hey Dhaw, I’m very touched about your words, for once, that you will always support Roma, and the other, that you won’t manage the ladri’s team, now I admire you even more!!!

    aman,

I loaded up Sunderland in the demo to see what options you had. Milevskyi or Ba might suit you up front (Ba is also England-trained should you make it to Europe), and Pandev is another moderately cost-effective choice. At the back… crap. Most of your budget should probably go there, because really you don’t seem to have many quality options. N’Koulou and Otamendi are both projects in the middle. Shawcross or Wheater might be viable, as would Ignashevich. At fullback, I scouted Srna but wasn’t given a price. Ansaldi might work for you, though. Or you could do something completely different. But, again, given the range of options and what you have already, I’d say your money would be better spent on the defense. Just my two cents.

Also, hey everybody. Daryl has given me the opportunity to blog my own FM exploits too, so I thought I’d say hi. No idea for a team yet. My real life support is for Liverpool, but I don’t think another EPL team is a good idea. I also don’t think I know enough about lower-tier teams to do them justice. Suggestions are very, very welcome. I was considering maybe a team like Valencia or Atletico Madrid, but maybe a Ligue 1 team might balance things out?
