FM 2011: The Beginning

By: Dave | November 4th, 2010

FM2011 FM2011 has arrived a day early, and the big question is: Who  should I be?

I’ve never been incredibly lucky in life. Electrical equipment tends to explode when I’m around, and I once ruined a mate’s new bathroom by showering before the wall coating had dried. But today, all this has changed. For today a parcel arrived. It was not a prepossessing parcel, nor was it very large, but what it contained was of incalculable wealth (or £24.99, depending on how you look at it). Yes, this parcel contained my pristine new copy of Football Manager 2011.

Now that I have access to the full game and all of its joys, one question rears it ugly head: Who should I be? In my previous excursions into this virtual reality I have always done games with Arsenal, Newcastle and Kettering Town, along with whichever other clubs take my fancy (last year it was Ajax and Corinthians).

As the previous blogger appears to have disappeared from the face of the Earth, it is left to me to describe a career. So, who do you want me to be? Either pick one of my selections above, or make one of your own. Every idea, no matter how outlandish, is welcome. Just please don’t make me be Sunderland.

    Always a difficult decision, I will go for a lower division team in a not to strong European League. Belgium could be. Good luck.

    off topic but i have a question…i’ve played ea sports FIFA MANAGER editions before and i quite liked them but i have never played FM.i planning to buy one now and confused which one should i get.which game do you think is better FIFA MANAGER or FOOTBALL MANAGER????would love some help from fellow readers…

    regarding your team,i think you should pick ac milan!!they have some good players to keep you in the hunt with top teams but rest of the squad is old and it would be fun rebuilding the side and win trophies with them!!

    @swapnil I tried FIFA manager 09 but not last year’s version. The 3D engine is far ahead of FM’s, but for a lot of players that’s not a very important part of the game. FIFA manager lacks a lot of the depth of FM, not just in terms of number of players, but that everyone has an opinion and you can have an opinion on everybody else and express that in game.
    Personally I find Football Manager to be far and away the best management sim out there and cannot recommend it highly enough, you will not be disappointed! I will say definitely don’t go for Championship Manager, I found last year’s version tedious at best.
    Thanks for the suggestion so far guys, St. Pauli has got me very interested, and I was thinking of doing an AC Milan game anyway. Keep the suggestions coming.

    I used Udinese in last year’s game and am frantically finishing one final season. I was thinking of using Hoffenheim for this year’s game as well as a second game in the lowest division in France. How about one of the weaker Ukrainian Premier League teams so you can struggle to topple the Shakhtar and Dynamo hegemony and revel in the glory when you do?

    nobody seems to ever do any german teams and with such a topsy turvy league a team from that division would be very exciting. a humorous and challenging challenge could be bringing derby county back to the premier. also if you want a big team from italy rebuilding juventus would be a lot more exciting than ac milan. and yes i am bias.

    i usually start first with big team like man u, liverpool, arsenal, valencia to get use to the new feature/format, and to scout bargain deals and high potential young players.

    after a season or two, i usually create new game and play in russia or belgium with less known club as their league has no work permit/player restriction

    I presume this is on Steam? Try opening Steam, select “Library” and then “Games”, does it appear on your list of games? I bought the disc and then downloaded it onto Steam using that, so I haven’t had this problem, my best suggestion would be to look at http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php/156429-Steam-Problems-FAQ-and-Basic-Crash-Troubleshooting , see if your problem is there and if not then post it and someone from Sports Interactive will help you.

    @swapnil
    absolutely no problem, always glad to bring yet another convert into the fold.

    @Weston
    let me know how you get on, if you need any more help just leave a comment on here and I’ll do whatever I can.

    And just a warning to everyone, there are a couple of problems with the database at the moment, Spanish leagues have a 2 yellow cards = 1 game ban rule when it should be 5 like most other leagues, and there’s something strange going on with French players being suspended in preseason, but SI are looking into doing a hotfix (a mini-patch) to fix these issues, so if you’re going to play in the Spanish league maybe hold off until more is announced, I’ll try and keep everyone posted on here.

    More info can be found on the SI forums at http://community.sigames.com

    The French suspension issue is easily fixable in the editor for anyone who knows what they’re doing, a list of the players affected can be found in post #215 of http://bit.ly/9YGNC1

    No worries man, let me know what you think!

    Vis the Spanish and French issues SI are currently working on a hotfix for it, as far as I know for people using Steam the game should be updated automatically, although I’m unsure if the hotfix will be savegame compatible, you may have to start a new game for these changes to come into effect.

    and has anyone else had a problem with the board saying you dont have enough funds for a player or staff member when you actually do? i have $60,000+ in wages available and it wont let me sign a physio whos asking for $6,000. either i have no idea what im doing or this game has a lot more bugs this year…

    cornercorner
  • Dave |  November 6th, 2010 at 5:33 pm

    cornercorner

    @Weston, the physio thing is most likely related to the board placing restrictions on the number of staff you’re allowed, you can ask them to up the number through the Board Interaction screen.

    Yeah, there are a fair few bugs with this version but the only gamebreaker is the Spanish League issue and that’s being dealt with.

    What else could you say? Not everyone has got the same views however it is good to see a diverse range of ways of looking at things, to put it crudely. Makes you settle back and wonder about your individual habits and preconceived ideas sometimes.
